Padua square was buzzing as crowds gathered to watch the finalist’s prepare their Italian inspired cocktails for round one.
Matthew started the round with his bright and bubbly, Zara Fizz cocktail. Using lemons, limes and oranges found earlier in the market he muddled the wedges. Then poured Luxardo Maraschino over the fruit wedges and added syrup and pineapple juice for extra sweetness. After shaking his mix and fine straining it into a champagne flute, he topped with champagne, and garnished with an orange and cherry.
David stepped up to the Luxardo stage to prepare his fiery Phoenix and the Flame cocktail. He mixed Luxardo Sangue Morlacco with Luxardo Chilli and Spices to create a hot spicy mix. To sweeten he added cherry vodka, cherry juice and bergamot juice. Using pinch cherry and birch ash he added his final touches.
Finally, it was Nathan’s turn to create his aptly named cocktail, A Summer in Italia. He added basil leaves to a goblet and muddled with sugar and pepper. Over his muddled leaves he poured Luxardo Apertivo, gin and Luxardo Maraschino. Fresh lemon juice and sugar syrup were added for an extra kick. To finish he churned with crushed ice and added two straws with a rose.
And that was round one complete! The judges took some time to taste the Italian inspired cocktails before round 2 began…
